David was born on May 11, 1947, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, the second of four children to John Eric "Jack" Anderson and Jean Reed (Manor) Anderson.He graduated from West Mifflin North High School in 1965 and then attended West Virginia University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Speech: Radio, TV, and Film Production in 1971. .
